What is Atropa Belladonna?

Atropa belladonna L. is a perennial herbaceous plant in the Solanaceae family, genus Atropa.

Root: Cylindrical, 5–15 mm in diameter, with a light grayish-brown surface.

Stem: Flattened cylindrical shape, 3–6 mm in diameter; surface yellowish-green, exhibiting fine longitudinal wrinkles and sparse, small lenticels; hollow inside.

Leaves: Often wrinkled and fragmented; intact leaves are ovate-elliptical in shape, ranging from yellowish-green to dark brown.Flowers: Calyx with 5 lobes; corolla bell-shaped.

Fruit: Spherical, 5–8 mm in diameter, with a long stalk (pedicel); contains numerous seeds.

Odor and Taste: Subtle odor; slightly bitter and pungent taste.

Pharacological Effects:As a traditional Chinese medicinal herb, the entire plant of Atropa belladonna contains Alkaloids, which exert sedative, anesthetic, analgesic, antispasmodic, and secretory-inhibiting effects (e.g., reducing secretions from salivary and sweat glands), as well as pupil-dilating properties. Due to these pharmacological actions, it is widely utilized in the production of anticholinergic drugs.
